BLOOMINGTON, IN.(WISH) -
Bloomington Police have made an arrest in a fatal hit and run accident that occurred Tuesday morning on Moores Pike near the intersection of Olcott Boulevard.
Authorities were called just before 8 am and found 37 year old Johnny Shane Harden lying in the street suffering from serious head trauma.
Harden's motorcycle was found nearby.
A witness at the scene told police a white Pontiac Sunfire left the scene, heading west of Moores Pike.
At 10:00 am, police learned that a man had gone to the Monroe County Jail indicating that he was the driver of the vehicle involved in the accident.
27 year old Steven Finch, was transported to the Bloomington Police Department to be interviewed.
Finch admitted that he was distracted by an electronic device and observed the motorcycle traveling the same direction in front of him.
He told police, he was unable to avoid the motorcycle and struck it on the passenger side of his vehicle knocking the driver from the motorcycle.
He initially stopped after the impact, and backed up, dragging Harden's body that was lying in the roadway.
Once the body was dislodged from being underneath the vehicle, Finch made a U-turn and left the area going west on Moores Pike.
After leaving the area, Finch stopped at a convenience store in the Ellettsville area to purchase tobacco and then went to a car wash to attempt to wash away any evidence of the accident.
Finch went to the residence of his parents and was eventually transported to the jail where he turned himself in.
Finch was arrested for leaving the scene of an accident causing death.
As required by Indiana law for accidents involving serious bodily injury or death, a blood draw was obtained and toxicology results are pending.
An autopsy is scheduled for the victim Wednesday morning in Terre Haute.
