Police: Student threatens peer with gun

ANDERSON, Ind. (WISH) - Officials arrested a middle school student Monday after he reportedly brought a gun to school and threatened a peer.

Madison County officials say two female students approached an off-duty officer working at the school around 10 a.m. The girls told the officer that a male student threatened a girl with a handgun. They said the teen showed the girl the gun and said he would shoot her if she told anyone about something he had wrote on a chalkboard.

Police arrested the 16-year-old on preliminary charges of intimidation, possession of a firearm on school property and carrying a handgun without a permit. Investigation shows he handed the gun off to a fellow student, who hid it in a classroom. That student was not charged in this incident. It is not yet clear if the school will punish that student.

The student reportedly showed the gun to multiple students at the school. The gun was not loaded, but it is not yet clear how Steward obtained the weapon.

Officers have taken statements from students and staff at Highland Middle School.

Our partners at the Herald Bulletin say the student's probation officer and the Madison County prosecutor’s office waived the teen on to adult court after a review of the case.

This incident is still under investigation.
