Prosecutors to retry Ind. woman in 2 sons' deaths

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) - Northern Indiana prosecutors have decided to retry a woman facing child neglect charges in the car trunk deaths of her two young sons.

A St. Joseph County jury failed to reach a verdict earlier this month in Jacqueline Wilk's first trial in her sons' deaths. The 2- and 4-year old boys locked themselves in the trunk of Wilk's car in June 2011 and died from hyperthermia.

The South Bend Tribune reports that several days of testimony focused on whether the 25-year-old New Carlisle woman properly supervised the boys before they died. Jurors could not agree on whether the boys' deaths were an accident or resulted from neglect.

Wilk's attorney says it's disappointing that the state has decided to retry the case rather than dismiss the charges.
