MARION, Ind. (WISH) - Indiana State Police officers are investigating a shooting involving police that occurred Saturday night.

According to a release from the State Police, a black male suspect, armed with a shotgun, entered the Dollar General Store at 1101 S. Baldwin Ave. in Marion, Ind.

The suspect demanded money from a clerk who was taking inventory from the day.

A second employee heard the encounter and called 911., reporting the alleged robbery.

Officers from the Marion Police Department arrived and set up a perimeter around the store. Officers also entered the front of the store.

The suspect attempted to leave out the back of the store but ran into police. Police say the suspect then pointed the gun at the waiting officers and fired at least one round.

Two Marion officers returned the fire, the suspect was struck several times.

No police officers or store employees were injured in this incident. However, the suspect was pronounced dead just before 10:30 p.m. on the scene.

The suspect has been identified as Robert Lee Thompson, 61, of Marion, Ind.

The Grant County Coroner has scheduled an autopsy. The date and time of that autopsy has not been released.

The Marion officers who were involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave until the investigation is complete.
