SHELBYVILLE, Ind. (WISH) - A Shelbyville High School cheer coach is accused of having sex with a student.
Police arrested 22-year-old Megan Crafton on charges of seduction of a minor. Police say her role as an educator is what sent her to jail.
Five years younger than Crafton is her alleged victim, a 17-year-old student, who is also a member of Shelbyville's basketball team.
Court records show the part-time assistant cheerleading coach admitted to performing sex acts on the teen in her car.
Lt. Michael Turner, of the Shelbyville Police Department, tells 24-Hour News 8 he believes the relationship between Crafton and the student may have started sometime in January.
“The relationship itself between Crafton and the 17-year-old boy is not illegal, but the fact she held a part time job here at the school made that relationship a crime,” said Turner. "She was employed as a quote un quote teacher as a assistant cheerleading coach and that made her an authoritative role over this child which by state statute makes it illegal.”
24-Hour News 8 reached out to administrators at Shelbyville Central Schools on the status of Crafton's employment, but they declined comment.
