INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - A Marion County juvenile court judge has denied a motion to have a 15-year-old girl charged as an adult in the May stabbing death of her 4-year-old cousin .
The stabbing occurred May 5 at an apartment at Beechwood Gardens in the 2700 block of North Graham Avenue. The young boy, Leon Thomas III, was sleeping when his cousin, 14 years old at the time, stabbed him 16 times before fleeing the home, police said. The boy was taken to Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health, where he was pronounced dead.
The grandparents were also asleep, but the boy’s 11-year-old sister witnessed the stabbing, police said.
The teen suspect was located a few blocks away.
“When they apprehended her, she had blood on her hands and blood splattered on her shirt,” Kendale Adams, spokesman for Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, said at the time.
The teen was later arrested and preliminarily charged with murder.
Judge Marilyn Moores has set juvenile proceedings for later this month.
