INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - Jurors received their instructions Thursday evening as they prepare to deliberate the fate of James Stewart.
He’s the accused accomplice in the Hamilton Avenue killings, the worst mass murder in Indianapolis history.
The testimony ended late Thursday afternoon.
Now it’s on to closing arguments Friday morning and then jury deliberations.
Stewart is accused of helping Desmond Turner kill seven members of a family in a home in the 500 block of North Hamilton Avenue.
Murdered were Alberto Covarrubias; his partner, Emma Valdez; their two young children; her two grown children; and her 5-year-old grandson.
Stewart’s trial has gone on for a little more than a week.
His defense attorney presented his case Thursday afternoon in just about three hours.
Among the witnesses were Stewart’s uncle and a former girlfriend who testified they were with Stewart elsewhere around the time of the killings on June 1, 2006.
However, a prosecution rebuttal witness said some of Stewart’s girlfriend’s testimony about timing that night was inaccurate.
Turner was convicted in the murders in October and he’s now serving a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole.
Stewart could face a prison sentence of hundreds of years if he’s found guilty.
