Two attempt a smash and ATM grab

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - Police are investigating an attempted smash and grab of a gas station ATM early Wednesday morning.

Indianapolis Metropolitan Police say a black truck backed into the glass front doors of a Marathon Gas Station in the 3100 block of North College Avenue around 3:30 a.m. Wednesday. station.

Video surveillance shows two people trying to put a strap cord around the ATM. The people got back into the truck but as they drove away, the strap broke. The vehicle then left the scene.

“It’s horrible damage. And a loss of business. You know, you repay the damage and the insurance and you keep cleaning up. And at one point they are going to say, 'We don't want to insure you anymore,'” said the store owner, Jaswant Banwait.

Banwait said the thieves only wanted one thing, his ATM machine. 

Last year thieves were able to successfully take an ATM form his store.  In response, Banwait bolted his new machine to the floor.  

Banwait says his store is broken into at least three to four times a year.  That's why he plans to close his shop once his lease expires in two years.

The store was closed at the time of the burglary.

Officials said they were able to locate the truck and no arrests have been made. The gas station will remain closed Wednesday for investigation.
