WAYNETOWN, Ind. (WISH) - A Montgomery County woman is facing neglect charges after a paralyzed man in her care died.
Tammy S. Elkins, 54, Waynetown, was arrested Tuesday at Montgomery County Jail. Police began an investigation after her dependent, Michael Elkins, 25, was brought to St. Elizabeth East Hospital in Lafayette in serious condition in December. He had been in a motor bike accident as a child, police said, and was paralyzed from the neck down.
Michael Elkins was later transferred to IU Medical Center in Indianapolis, where he died Jan. 4.
Adult Family Services of Tippecanoe County and Montgomery County Prosecutor Joe Buser requested the investigation, which led to Tammy Elkins being charged with two counts of neglect of a dependent resulting in serious bodily injury. The investigation is continuing, Indiana State Police said.
