INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - Indiana colleges and universities that train the teachers of tomorrow are speaking out against the state school superintendent's plan to overhaul teacher education.
Indiana Schools Superintendent Dr. Tony Bennett said future teachers should get their degrees in fields such as math or science with fewer of the education courses that teach them how to teach.
Dr. Patricia Rogan of IUPUI Associate Dean of Education said, "The question that we have as educators is why would we abolish standards in a quest for teacher excellence, and impact on student achievement?"
"We are going to get this right. We are going to listen intently," said Dr. Bennett.
Indiana Schools Chief has been criticized by educators for not talking with them before recommending massive changes to teacher preparation and certification.
