BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (WISH) - The Children's Museum of Indianapolis is partnering with IU Bloomington Office of Underwater Science . And it's a rare discovery that's bringing them together.

The first pirate’s cannon recovered in the Caribbean is now at an underwater science lab at IU Bloomington.

Treasure hunters have been searching for items from Captain Kidd’s pirate ship for centuries.

“It’s something that is going to rewrite history, rewrite the books,” said Frederick Hanselmann, one of the field researchers that helped bring the cannon up from just off the coast of the Dominican Republic.

The cannon is one of 26 found stacked in 10 feet of water off Catalina Island. During the cannon’s five-year stay in Indiana it will undergo extensive research. For part of that time it will displayed at the Children’s Museum.

Jeff Patchen, the CEO of the Children’s Museum, says he’s very proud of the partnership, “It’s about real people… it’s a way to unwrap history.”
