INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - An elementary school teacher got a big surprise on Friday when she was named Indianapolis Public Schools’ teacher of the year.
Melissa Moore has been teaching as Mary E. Nicholson School 70 for three years. It’s an IPS school for the district’s kindergarten to fifth grade performing arts magnet program.
IPS Superintendent Eugene White described Moore as creative, tenacious and a master at connecting with her students.
“I have a class this year that's been outstanding and they've allowed me to be the kind of teacher I want to be, so I'm really privileged, so thank you,” Moore said.
The teacher called the news overwhelming.
“I don't believe I am better than anybody else, so I am amazed to have this honor and I'm really touched, so thank you, thank you,” she said.
IPS teachers are chosen by their peers to represent their school in the state’s teacher of the year competition.
