WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) - Purdue University is getting $2.5 million in federal funds for nuclear research and to help train a new generation of nuclear scientists.

Purdue will use about $1.3 million in U.S. Department of Energy grants for two nuclear research projects, including an effort to develop a new type of molten metallic fuel reactor. Another $1.2 million in agency funding will help Purdue replace existing instruments and control systems in its research reactor with modern, solid-state technology.

The awards announced this week are among $47 million distributed in 143 awards to colleges and universities around the nation.

That funding includes $440,000 that University of Notre Dame researchers will use for a nuclear research project.
