GREENTOWN, Ind. (AP) - A school in north-central Indiana is hoping to increase literacy by issuing iPads to kindergarten students.

The Kokomo Tribune reports that Eastern Elementary School in Greentown, 10 miles east of Kokomo, plans to buy about 100 tablets to be given to students in August.

Eastern Superintendent Tracy Caddell says the money will coming from the district's rainy day fund and a technology fee parents will pay. He says the iPad will bring the school to the home.

Kindergarten teacher Tami Maurer says the tablets will be loaded with children's books and applications that test the skills the children already are learning. Maurer says she will be able to tailor iPads to individual student. Maurer says she hopes the iPads encourage kids to read more, too.
