INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - Pike Township teacher Wilson Reyes thought he was attending just another assembly at his school Monday, but instead he received a prestigious education award.

Reyes, an English language learner and Spanish teacher at Guion Creek Middle School, received a 2011 Milken Educator Award. The national honor will only be given to 40 teachers across the country and one in Indiana this school year.

Along with the honor, Reyes received $25,000. He didn’t know he was being considered for the award.

Reyes’ mouth dropped and he paused before standing, smiling and walking up to shake hands with Indiana Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Bennett. Reyes had a look of shock as he was awarded an over-sized check.

“Wow. Let me tell you I don’t do this, I don’t teach because of the money,” he said laughing. “I do this because I love you all.”

Reyes said he works with great people and great administrators.
