BARGERSVILLE, Ind. - An elderly Johnson county farmer is recovering at Methodist Hospital after an accident on his tractor Monday.
Firefighters were called to a Johnson County farm near Bargersville just before 12:00pm Monday. Farmer Melvin Smith rolled 100 feet down a ravine and fell off his tractor. Firefighters had to use ropes, a basket, and a back board to pull him to safety.
"He was conscious and alert from the time we got him in a helicopter and was still conscious and alert and aware of what's going on as he was being flown to Methodist. Mr. Smith is in his 90's," explained Michael Herron with the Bargersville Fire Department.
But Methodist Hospital administrators tell 24 Hour News 8 Smith is not out of the woods yet. He's currently listed in serious condition.
