INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - A new federal law says every pool in Indiana should have domed drains and two drains to prevent children from being sucked to the bottom of a pool.
A recent check of area pools found not only are many open but not in compliance, but lifeguards haven’t been trained how to shut off valves to drains when seconds count.
Ten years ago, the unthinkable happened to Harmony Tobin of Madison County. The little girl who had won ribbons from swimming drowned after her head was sucked into the pool filter pipe.
The suction force was so great, lifeguards and firefighters could not pull her off of it. Young Harmony of Indiana died and other children have been disemboweled or scarred as they sat on a grate in the baby pool.
