SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) - A shootout on South Bend's west side has left two persons dead and a third person injured after being shot by police.
South Bend Police Division Chief Gary Horvath tells WSBT-TV that one victim was found outside a home, and Metro Homicide Commander Tim Corbett tells the station a second victim was found in an alley next door.
When police responded to the shootings Sunday morning, a gunman opened on officers, who returned fire, striking the suspect. The gunman was taken to a hospital for surgery.
Residents of the neighborhood were asked to stay inside their homes while police blocked off the area.
Police did not immediately release the names of the persons involved.
