EAST CHICAGO, Ind. (AP) - Police in northwest Indiana say an 8-year-old boy died after he was struck by a train in East Chicago.
East Chicago police Sgt. Detective Jose Rivera tells The Times that the boy was waiting with other children for an eastbound train to pass Saturday afternoon when he was hit by a westbound train on another track.
Rivera said the children were standing too close to the tracks.
The Lake County coroner's office says the boy was pronounced dead of blunt force trauma about 3:15 p.m.
Police didn't release the boy's identity because his family hadn't been notified.
Rivera says the signs at the crossing were working.
The Times says at least two other people have been killed this year while on or near railroad tracks in Lake County.
