Christmas night snow could be big

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - A Christmas night snow storm could make driving treacherous.

The storm, expected to arrive Tuesday evening, could pile 5 to 9 inches up on Indiana streets. A winter storm watch is in effect for much of the state through Wednesday evening.

Snow totals will be higher that previously expected in areas of southern Indiana as the center of the storm has moved farther south.

Snow accumulations by Wednesday night still look to be hefty. Between 5 and 9 inches with locally higher amounts north of Interstate 70.

Some minor ice accumulation will mix in across central Indiana.

According to the National Weather Service, the storm will also bring some gusty winds which could result in blowing and drifting snow – though nothing like the first significant snow of the season last week. Gusts are only expected to reach about 35 mph, instead of the 50 mph winds that blew in on the first day of winter.

The highest snow totals are likely to fall northwest of Indianapolis. From Indy southeastward, a little sleet or even rain mixed in may limit snow totals. The most active period for the storm is likely to be from around midnight through noon Wednesday, said Forecast 8 meteorologist Paul Poteet.

In Indianapolis, Indy Snow Force planned a full callout of 118 drivers to report to work at 11 p.m. Christmas Day. If snow totals reach 6 inches or more, contractors are on stand-by to plow residential areas.

INDOT has provided drivers with the following tips for staying safe on the road:

• Accelerate gradually on ice or snow to avoid slipping and sliding.
• Drive slowly and carefully to avoid rear-end collisions and sliding on curves
• Allow greater distance behind the car ahead; it takes more time to stop on snow and ice.
• Brake early, break slowly, never slam on the brakes; if you have anti-lock brakes, press the pedal down firmly and hold it; if you don't, gently pump the pedal.
• No cruise control; avoid abrupt steering maneuvers.
• Maintain good visibility, stay alert and use your headlights so others can see you.
• Give snowplows room to operate; don't tailgate or try to pass.
