The King of Pop’s hometown of Gary honored him in a special memorial service Friday night. Big names and no-names packed into U.S. Steelyard Stadium so they could create their own final memory of Michael Jackson.
Reverend Jesse Jackson was in attendance and spoke to the crowd.
”The global talent that we celebrate today, our hearts are heavy and yet we rejoice," said Jackson.
Many fans commemorated the life and legacy of Jackson fittingly through song and dance. Performers took to the stage, mimicking Jackson’s signature moves to the tune of his most popular tracks. The crowd ate up every moment, some even belting out a few notes of their own.
Jackson’s career began in Gary as the lead singer in the Jackson Five. Chicago radio legend Herb Kent remembers Jackson when they were first starting out.
"I’ve never seen anything like it. The way he sang, danced, the way he performed," recalled Kent.
As the mayor of Gary described it, the service was designed to be fit for a king -- and it didn’t disappoint.
"I think it’s very fitting for the King of Pop. He came from humble beginnings and made it big. Everyone’s really enjoying it, I know I am," said fan Annette Jones.
There was speculation that Jackson’s body may possibly be at the service, but there was no sign of the gold-plated casket.
There's still no word on where Jackson will be buried, however we do know that he will be laid to rest with his signature white glove.
