INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Indiana's Bicentennial Commission has selected a dozen trail, park and wetland projects to honor the state's upcoming milestone in 2016.

Commission co-chairs Lt. Gov. Becky Skillman and former congressman Lee Hamilton said Monday the state will protect land around an inner-city lake, extend a rail-to-trail project through Hendricks County and add land to state parks and nature preserves.

Indiana will celebrate 200 years of statehood in 1816. The state celebrated its first centennial in 1916 by creating the state park system.

The new projects are being paid for in part through state funds and private donations.
