TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (AP) - Indiana State University is drawing criticism over its plan to eliminate a retail postal operation to help meet $10.5 million in state-ordered budget cuts.
The university has had three employees running the postal unit in the Federal Building for about a year, but says it can't afford to offer the service now.
The three jobs are among more than 100 the university plans to eliminate as part of budget cuts.
ISU spokeswoman Tara Singer says the university will continue to use the space for internal mail. U.S. Postal Service officials say they hope to keep post office boxes at the site.
Business owner Todd Nation says closing the only downtown retail postal operation could hurt area businesses.
