Allen latest Indiana county to lift burn ban

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP) - One of the state's largest counties is lifting its burn ban after recent rains brought some relief to dry conditions.

Allen County's burn ban expires at noon Friday.

Open burning will be allowed in unincorporated areas of the northeastern Indiana county. Within Fort Wayne City limits, open burning is always banned with the exception of recreational campfires for scouting or family cookouts.

County officials say a drought still exists and residents need to use extra care when burning outdoors. WANE-TV reports nearby Noble, Wells, DeKalb and Steuben counties lifted their burn bans earlier in the week.

The latest U.S. Drought Monitor released Thursday shows nearly all of Indiana is experiencing drought and one-fifth of the state is in the worst stage of drought.
