INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - Indiana Pacer Roy Hibbert stepped off the court and stepped up for a cause close to his heart, signing up to be a bone marrow donor.
Saturday Roy Hibbert joined Be the Match at Castleton Mall, an organization urging people to sign up for their registry.
All it takes is a swab inside the cheek and your information goes on a database. If a recipient in need of a bone marrow transplant is a match then the organization contacts you.
Roy Hibbert was touched by one fan's story. A 12-year-old, who passed away from Leukemia before getting a transplant.
“Unfortunately I was going to meet him when I was out in Sacramento, but he passed away the day I left," says Indiana Pacer Roy Hibbert. "I just want to keep a community member alive and send out the message."
Hibbert was on hand to sign autographs and the Indiana Pacers gave away two tickets to the Pacers vs. Minnesota pre-season game.
If you're interested in being a donor contact the Indiana Blood Center .
