INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - It happened 2 years ago. IMPD officer David Bisard accused of driving drunk and crashing into a group of motorcyclists injuring two people and killing Eric Wells.
Saturday hundreds of riders showed their support for Eric Wells and gave back to a cause that was close to his heart.
One motorcycle after another as far as you could see down state road 38 in Pendleton. “It still astounds me after 2 years how much support we still have, it's just amazing,” says Mary Wells Eric’s Mother.
Mary Wells watched on with tears in her eyes as every biker rode by thanking them for their support. “We figured we would be lucky if we had 50 and we prepared for 200 and we reached that and went way beyond that goal,” says Mary.
The Eric Wells Memorial Foundation Benefit Ride had more than 250 people registered. The money raised will go toward Dayspring Center, a homeless shelter in Indianapolis. Mary says every dollar that comes in from the benefit will help a child in need. “He's just been trying to do this his whole life so were trying to do this for him and in his memory,” says Tony Harrison one of the riders.
For those who knew Eric, raising money for such an important cause is the perfect way to let his memory live on. Mary says turning the fundraiser into a benefit ride is how Eric would have wanted it, since riding was such a big part of his life. “He was so excited when he got his bike. This gets little rough, he got his bike 2 weeks and he was planning a ride for children when this happened,” explains Mary.
On Monday Mary Wells was at the crash site marking the 2 year anniversary since the crash. She says she's glad to end such an emotional week on a high note. “Monday was more for us today is more for the ride and the children,” says Mary.
Organizers hoped to raise $20,000 for the Dayspring Center.
