INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - Travel prices, say experts, are always higher around the holidays.
However, some say, travelers still have time to book good deals if their dates are flexible, both going and coming back.
According to travel site Orbitz, prices for flights this month are, on average, 5-8 percent higher than last year.
Christmas Day & New Year’s Day are both on a Tuesday this season, so the busiest travel days are the Saturday and Sunday before.
Indianapolis travel agent Bethanne Harrison-Brown with The Travel Authority/Altour said one way to cut costs is to travel on either Christmas Eve, Christmas Day or New Year’s Eve, depending on your plans; flights are still available on those days.
Even though prices overall are higher this year, she said folks will generally pay the difference if it means they can be home with family for the holidays.
However, she cautioned, don't forget about travel insurance.
“Travel insurance not only just covers for inclement weather, it covers if you become ill, if a family member becomes ill, if it's work related,” Harrison-Brown said.
