INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - Mother's Day gifts are getting bigger, better, and more expensive. A recovering economy means more Americans are opening their wallets a little bite wider. “We're picking up some stems to take up to our mother in Northwest Indiana for Mother's day,” says shopper Natalie Conlon.
Natalie Conlon and her sister are getting a little something for their Mom this Mother's Day. Like most Americans flowers are the go to. According to the National Retail Federation 2/3’s of Americans buy flowers. “The last 2 years have been a lot busier than the last previous years um so I definitely think the economy is on an upswing,” says Amy Watt owner of Watt’s Blooming.
In Amy Watt’s store shoppers are spending anywhere from $30 to $200 on flowers for Mom. That's right on the mark according to the National Retail Federation this year the average American is spending $152 dollars, $12 more than the year before. “I believe that people really preplan their spending and they have budgets for Mother's Day and it's not an unlimited type of thing they spend a little more. We have gifts that start at $15 but the average person here is spending over $150,” explains Don Elliott owner of The Frame Shop & Franklin Barry Gallery.
Don Elliott’s store has a number of gifts, but most of his customers plan ahead. But for those that didn't getting a beautiful bouquet seems right. “They love to have the variety that we carry in our shop and just be able to pick their own stuff and have us build them something really pretty instead of something that's pre built and has been sitting in a plastic sheet for a week already,” says Amy Watt.
