City overpays workers by more than $130K

HAMMOND, Ind. (AP) - A state audit has found that the city of Hammond overpaid three public safety workers more than $130,000 while they were on a three-year leave.

The Indiana State Board of Accounts audit found the three workers were overpaid the combined amount while on extended leaves from 2009 to 2012.

Hammond City Controller Bobby Lendi tells The Times of Munster auditors have not responded to whether they'll seek reimbursement for the city.

The overpayment is one error noted in a 100-page audit of the city's finances, which showed the strain lower-than-projected property tax collections can place on the city.

Lendi says auditors noted that Hammond's financial statements are reliable and complete. He says that's important to show the public.
