City taking in land near new I-69 route

WASHINGTON, Ind. (AP) — The approaching completion of the first section of the Interstate 69 extension has led a southwestern Indiana city to annex nearly two square miles to control development near the new highway.
The annexation plan approved by the Washington City Council will add some 1,200 acres of mostly undeveloped land to the city.
Mayor Joe Wellman tells WTHI-TV the area around I-69 and U.S. 50 will be the city's new front door and should be developed in an orderly way.
The Washington Times-Herald reports that some land owners have objected to the annexation, saying they're worried about encroachment on their properties and higher taxes.
A 67-mile stretch of the new I-69 route is scheduled to open Monday from the Evansville area to near the Crane Naval Surface Warfare Center.
