City uses unexpected funds on roads, trees

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP) - The city of Fort Wayne plans to improve city neighborhoods with $5 million of the $8.5 million in unexpected income tax revenues it will receive.

The Journal Gazette reports ( http://bit.ly/KMxVSn ) Mayor Tom Henry announced Wednesday that the city would use $3.5 million for transportation projects and $1.5 million to help address the city's ash tree problem. The city is removing ash trees gutted by the emerald ash borer.

The city is receiving the money because the state discovered earlier this year that $206 million in local option income taxes collected by the state wasn't distributed because of a computer programming error.

The City Council still must approve the plan.
