Company to search for gaps under Goshen sidewalks

GOSHEN, Ind. (AP) — The city of Goshen has hired a company with an expertise in ground-penetrating radar to search for cavities under downtown sidewalks.

The Goshen News reports that the city's Redevelopment Commission has approved hiring Brownsburg-based Blood Hound Inc. to perform the work requested by the city engineering department.

City engineer Dustin Sailor says the move comes in the wake of last year's collapse of a downtown sidewalk, when Dew Drop Inn owner Ken Carner fell 10 feet into an abandoned vault in front of his business.

Sailor says more than 40 spots have been identified as locations where there might be gaps under the sidewalk. The vaults were used more than 100 years ago to store coal and later to move or store goods.
