INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - The Salvation Army has extended hours for its cooling centers later into the evening, due to the extreme heat. The organization has also added cooling centers across the state.
In addition to the two locations in Indianapolis – 4400 N. High School Road and 1337 Shelby St. – the organization has added cooling centers in Anderson, Bedford, Bloomington, Brown County, Columbus, Connersville, Evansville, Fort Wayne, Henry County, Huntington, Johnson County, Kokomo, Lafayette, Logansport, Madison, Marion, Muncie, New Albany, Peru, Princeton, Shelbyville, Terre Haute, Vincennes, and Warsaw.
All cooling centers will now be open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., two hours later than previously planned, through Sunday. If the extreme heat lasts into next week, The Salvation Army will keep the centers open.
Each center will offer air conditioning, a comfortable place to rest, hydration and light snacks.
On Thursday in Indianapolis, the organization reported a couple dozen people had utilized the cooling centers as of about 4:30 p.m.
