County judge defers on South Bend police tapes

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) - A county judge will wait to see if a federal court rules on whether recordings of South Bend police phone calls can be released before stepping into the legal fight.
Those recordings led Mayor Pete Buttigieg to demote the city's police chief in March.
The South Bend City Council asked a St. Joseph County judge to force the mayor to release the tapes, but the city attorney wants a federal judge to determine whether listening to the recordings would violate wiretapping laws.
The South Bend Tribune reports the county judge ruled he would wait until early December before taking on the case.
A lawsuit filed by some officers claims former Chief Darryl Boykins ordered the recordings to determine whether division chiefs were personally loyal to him.
