County looks to fix covered bridge

AUBURN, Ind. (AP) — A county official says the damage isn't as bad as it looks on a nearly 140-year-old wooden covered bridge in northeastern Indiana that had its roof trusses broken when a too-tall semitrailer drove through it.

DeKalb County's insurance agent told the County Council on Monday that the trucking company has been cooperative and seems to want repairs made to the Spencerville Covered Bridge as quickly as possible.

The Star of Auburn reports (http://bit.ly/WdSaQy ) county highway superintendent Eric Patton says repairs are estimated to cost about $115,000 and the damage won't get worse during the wait.

The one-lane bridge about 20 miles north of Fort Wayne has been closed to traffic since last week when the truck tore down several 6-by-6-inch crossbeams, roof supports and metal tie rods.
