DNR: Herpes virus kills off carp, koi

BROOKVILLE, Ind. (WISH) - Hundreds or thousands of fish died in Brookville Lake this fall as a result of koi herpes virus, or KHV, Indiana’s Department of Natural Resources said Tuesday.

Purdue University’s Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory tested carp found in the lake and discovered the virus. The virus affects common carp and koi.

There is no human health risk with the virus, though the DNR is asking people out boating and fishing to help prevent the spread of it. People can help the following ways:

  • Dispose of unused bait after a fishing trip rather than releasing it or saving it and using it somewhere else.
  • Drain and dry or disinfect all equipment before moving to another waterway.
  • Refrain from releasing fish caught in one body of water to another body of water.

For more information, visiting the DNR’s invasive species website .
