DNR to ask for deer charges to be dropped

CONNERSVILLE, Ind. (WISH) - The Department of Natural Resources will ask for charges to be dismissed against a Connersville couple that rescued a dying deer.
After reviewing the case, Mike Pence asked the DNR to reevaluate the charges. As a result, the department will seek dismissal of the charges.
The DNR is expected to ask for the dismissal Friday afternoon, according to a release from the Department of Natural Resources.
Jeff Counceller, a Connersville police officer, said he found the deer in 2010 curled up on a front porch with maggot-infested puncture wounds. He and his wife, Jennifer, kept the deer in an enclosure on their farm and named it Dani.
Prosecutors later charged the Councellers with illegal possession of a white-tailed deer, a misdemeanor that carries up to 60 days in jail and a $500 fine.
