INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - Indiana Attorney General Greg Zoeller said the number of Do Not Call complaints has more than doubled in the past year.
"We are losing ground on the battle against robo calls and scammers," said Zoeller.
The Attorney General said one reason for the slippage is the advancement of technology. Many of the telemarketers can call thousands of people at one time.
That’s why Zoeller held a round table discussion with telemarketers, consumer protection groups, and other elected officials.
The goal is to find ways to penalize the callers and get the unwanted calls to stop.
"I think that is a great idea," said resident Chris Zack. "We shouldn't be getting those calls at all."
Currently, those who violate the list and are caught are charged $10,000. The second violation results in a $25,000 fine.
Some of the companies are accused of disguising their information on the caller ID. The attorney general estimates that 70 percent of unwanted callers are scammers.
