CROWN POINT, Ind. (AP) - A Lake County magistrate has entered a not guilty plea on behalf of a 76-year-old retired physician from northwestern Indiana charged with murdering his 95-year-old mother.
Charles Davidson of Dyer also was formally charged Wednesday with involuntary manslaughter and assisting suicide in the death of Blanche Bradley. She was found April 1 with gunshot wounds to her chest and leg. Davidson told police he shot his mother, then himself.
Davidson is free on a $10,000 bond. The Times of Munster and the Post-Tribune of Merrillville report that court records state Davidson told authorities he is a terminally ill cancer patient and didn't want to be a burden to his family.
A message seeking comment was left Thursday for defense attorney Darnail Lyles by The Associated Press.
