Fair officials: Releasing severe weather plans creates risk

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - The Indiana State Fair starts in a week, but the state is not providing details on how it plans to keep Hoosiers safe in severe weather.

Weeks ago I-Team 8 asked for the fair's severe weather plan. It was revised following last year's tragedy at the fairgrounds that left seven people dead.

Friday, the state released the 344 page long plan. However, most of it has been redacted by officials, leaving mostly blank pages.

The state said it won't share the information because releasing it could make the fair vulnerable to a terrorist attack.

Here's what the plan includes:
Definitions of severe weather
A “unified command” – or a group of people that will determine if a plan need to be activated.
Standard operating procedures to delay or cancel activities because of weather.

The plan doesn’t spell out what those standard operating procedures are, what people will be instructed to do and how communications will work.

I-Team 8 has asked state to release more of the details, including where Hoosiers should go if severe weather strikes.
