FedEx workers deliver last minute Christmas gifts on Christmas Eve

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) - FedEx workers spent their Christmas Eve delivering last minute Christmas gifts to people in northeast Indiana.

"Last week, we started getting busier and busier. Thursday was our busiest day, it was probably 25 to 30 percent above what normal volumes are," said Sara Walker, FedEx Senior Manager of the Fort Wayne Hub.

During this Christmas Eve delivery, routes and personnel nearly doubled. Walker said on a normal delivery day, there are 27 routes. On Christmas Eve, workers will be visiting 46 routes.

Carrie Keiss has been with FedEx for 16 years. She was hired around Christmas time and enjoys delivering to her customers.

"This time of year, a lot of the customers they're just happy you showed up," Keiss said. "When they don't think they're going to get their present, then you show up, that's a part of the rewarding thing."

After delivering packages for those 16 years, she realized that she wears different hats on her job.

"If we're delivering meds or something, we're the only people some of these people see in a whole day," she said.

Walker said this year has been a good year for FedEx. After seeing a decline in people using its services, there's been a slight increase in revenue the last couple years. She said the local district is seeing between two to five percent increase, and nationally, a one percent increase.

FedEx will be closed on Christmas Day, but will be open on Wednesday.
