Firefighter dies after tanker crash

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WISH) - Fort Wayne police confirm a firefighter has died after a tanker truck responding to a grass fire rolled over Sunday night, according to our sister station WANE-TV .

The fire was called out just before 8:30 p.m. Sunday on the city's northwest edge. About 20 minutes later, police dispatchers said, there was a report that a Washington Township Volunteer Fire Department water tanker truck had rolled over as it was arriving.

The firefighter was originally listed in critical condition, but police confirmed the driver later died.

Sgt. Mark Brooks with the Fort Wayne Police Department said water in the tank shifted as the truck turned, and the momentum caused the truck to roll onto the driver's side and slide several feet.

Investigators believe the driver was the only person in the truck, but the investigation is ongoing. A news conference is expected sometime Monday.

The truck also hit three utility poles after it flipped, and live wires were down with the firefighter trapped inside the truck. AEP shut off power in the area for about two hours.
