First-responders at train crash get ill from food

VALPARAISO, Ind. (AP) - Health officials in northwestern Indiana say about 60 emergency workers responding to a freight train collision northeast of Valparaiso became ill with symptoms of gastroenteritis after eating sandwiches.

Porter County Health Department Administrator Keith Letta says people who became sick after responding to the crash Friday reported symptoms of nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal cramping. He says most were sick about 24 hours. No one was hospitalized.

The health department says the source of the outbreak was a restaurant in Valparaiso. The health department says the store was cleaned, sanitized and disinfected before it was allowed to reopen Wednesday.

A person answering the telephone at the restaurant Wednesday who would not give his name declined comment.
