FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP) - The city of Fort Wayne is launching a comprehensive study of its downtown rivers as part of an effort to spur development along those riverfront areas.
Mayor Tom Henry says the study will examine environmental issues, flooding, navigation and recreation uses. He said Tuesday the goal is to "provide the road map to world-class investment." The city has set aside up to $500,000 for the study.
Fort Wayne was founded at the confluence of the St. Joseph, St. Marys and Maumee rivers.
The Journal Gazette reports numerous studies have urged officials to take better advantage of the city's rivers.
But no study has looked at how to use the waterways, whether they can be used and what their use might mean for development.
