Future of Elkhart Armory hinges on repair costs

ELKHART, Ind. (AP) - The future of a century-old building in Elkhart could hinge on the cost of repairing some of its trusses.

Indiana Landmarks Director Todd Zeiger tells The Elkhart Truth the group is seeking estimates to repair some damaged trusses in the Armory building.

He says that if repair costs are reasonable, the redevelopment commission will seek requests to redevelop the building.

Zeiger says the building will be demolished if no developer comes forward.

The building has served as a liquor store, auto dealership, skating rink and grocery store but was never used as an armory. It has been closed for years.
