CROWN POINT, Ind. (AP) - A northwestern Indiana judge has granted a two-month delay in the start of the trial of a Hammond man charged with murdering his 13-year-old son three years ago.
The trial of 40-year-old Riley Choate now is scheduled to begin Oct. 9. It had been scheduled to begin Aug. 13.
The Times of Munster reports defense attorney Randy Godshalk requested the delay because he had not yet received transcripts of testimony given last fall by the Choate's 17-year-old daughter, Christina. She testified she regularly struck her brother, Christian, chained him to a bed and caged him, by order of their father and stepmother to avoid being punished herself. Christina hasn't been charged.
The stepmother, 47-year-old Kimberly Kubina Choate, pleaded guilty in May to neglect and agreed to testify against Choate.
