INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Indiana's wintertime moratorium on heating disconnections has started.
Under Indiana law, utilities cannot disconnect customers' natural gas or electric service from Dec. 1 through March 15 if they receive help from the federally funded Energy Assistance Program or provide the utility with written proof of eligibility for assistance. The program is available through Community Action Agencies in Indiana.
The Indiana Office of Utility Consumer reminds customers they remain responsible for paying their utility bills, even if covered by the moratorium.
People can learn the name and location of their nearest Indiana Community Action Agency by calling 1-800-872-0371.
