Henryville principal reflects on destroyed school

HENRYVILLE, Ind. (WISH) - Principal Troy Albert knew his school, Henryville High School, was damaged, but he didn’t know how badly until he tried to get out of the building to assess it.

“The front was totally destroyed,” Albert told 24-Hour News 8 Reporter Teresa Mackin. He went back into the building to head to the back and found six other staff members.

About 15 minutes later, Albert said the second wave of severe weather hit.

“The staff and the students were calm, they stayed calm and they helped us,” he said.

Albert was communicating with the principal of the town’s elementary school over radio.

“That made it comforting to know that they were OK, too,” Albert said.

The principal said it was "shocking" and "unbelievable" that everyone got out of his school safely.

Around noon on Saturday, Albert said there was a meeting planned with the superintendent of the school district to decide what the district does next.

“We’re just going to have to find a place where we can have school and do the best we can to finish the school year,” Albert said.

Henryville schools have about nine weeks left of the school year.
