Hoosiers attend rare bald eagle viewing

CAYUGA, IND. (WTHI) - Folks from around Indiana visited the Wabash Valley Saturday and got a rare glimpse of our national bird.

Duke energy held its 18th annual bald eagle viewing day at its plant in Cayuga.

The day included various viewing stations and a presentation by the American Eagle Foundation.

Duke Energy said it was privileged to give visitors this unique opportunity every year.

A combination of warm water around the plant and cold weather bring the bald eagles around the facility.

“[The event happens] in the cold weather because the eagles benefit from our warm water discharge and they like to feed on the fish in the open water…We create that open water by having a warm water discharge, so the eagles tend to congregate around our facility,” said Duke Energy Manager Mike Wertz.

The event was free to the public and about 1,000 visitors took part in the event.

Organizers say you could spot thirteen bald eagles flying around the area.
