CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind. (WISH) - The Indiana Department of Transportation is warning Hoosiers to watch out for potholes as temperatures rise across the state this week.
According to a release from INDOT, potholes develop when water seeps into the cracks in a road and then freezes. The freezing water then expands the pavement and soil beneath the surface. When the ice melts, traffic driving over the roadway loosens the pavement, forming a pothole.
Hot mix asphalt plants are closed during the winter months. So, when potholes form during winter months a cold mix is used instead and they require ongoing maintenance and can reopen several times throughout the season. Once spring arrives, INDOT will replace the cold mix with the more permanent fix.
Motorists are urged to beware of potholes forming this week as the temperatures rise. To report a pothole on a numbered state road, interstate, or highway, contact INDOT at 888-924-6368.
